Promoting Accessibility

GeerGarage offers quality gear rental at competitive price points designed to remove cost barriers and reduce decision fatigue for Renters while allowing gear owners to recoup money from unused gear when they Lend.

Pricing for accessibility

Let’s be honest: purchasing tents, stoves, sleeping bags and backpacks sturdy enough for outdoor adventure is pricey. Engaging in an activity, like mountain biking, or paddle boarding, can be expensive too. These upfront costs are a barrier to participating for many.

Renting is always an option, but those costs can be unclear. We address this at GeerGarage. Through competitive rental pricing designed to promote accessibility, we open (out)doors for renters and gear owners to save and make money from unused, cared-for personal equipment.

Outdoors for everyone

Want more diversity in camping? Start with the gear, says the Los Angeles Times, while addressing the cost of outdoor gear as a barrier to accessibility. The 2020 article speaks to Mo Jackson, who believes that high cost stops people of color from accessing the outdoors. Her solution? Offering free camping kits. She started a GoFundMe page that raised an impressive $55,000 to buy items for free camping kits.

One of her users is quoted saying: "I’m working class. I was intimidated. Did I have what I needed? Would I be warm and comfortable? Camping is an investment, and I’ve always had to prioritize other bills."

While we’d love to offer free gear ownership like Mo (pssst, we are working on it with our Lend to Own program), rental is our strength at GeerGarage. Instead, we offer the next best thing. With competitive, community-driven rentals, we reach an indefinite amount of people to maximize accessibility, while allowing gear owners to make money from unused gear.

Ignoring the substantial environmental benefits for now, there’s two questions we are always asking when pricing rentals:

  1. Gear users, is it more economical to rent from a major chain or vendor or to rent from GeerGarage?

  2. Gear owners, should your outdoor gear sit collecting dust, or get set to work making you extra money?

A community of inclusion

It’s not all about cash though. Financials aside, GeerGarage offers both Lenders and Renters an opportunity to be part of a local community; of outdoor enthusiasts who share experiences and a love of adventure, but who also feel driven by making the outdoors accessible and prioritizing the planet.

By using the GeerGarage platform, you are participating in a community of like-minded individuals who want to build a socially and environmentally responsible future. GeerGarage’s pricing and philosophy prioritizes planet over profit to address today’s challenges and open (out)doors for our members. But don’t take our word for it, click join and see for yourself!
