From rugged mountain biking routes to breathtaking hikes and scenic drives, the Evergreen State comes alive with autumn hues and outdoor opportunities.
Fall Adventure Safety Tips
Before hitting the trails this fall, it's important to be prepared for the changing conditions that come with the season. While Washington’s fall landscapes are breathtaking, unpredictable weather and shifting temperatures can make outdoor adventures challenging. Here are some tips to help you stay safe and comfortable during your fall outings:
Layer Up: Temperatures can fluctuate dramatically in the fall, so wearing layers is key. Start with moisture-wicking base layers to keep sweat off your skin, add insulating layers for warmth, and top it off with a waterproof, windproof jacket in case the weather turns.
Check the Forecast: Always check the weather forecast before heading out, but remember that conditions can change rapidly, especially in the mountains. Be ready for rain, fog, or even early snowfall.
Bring Snacks & Hydration: Long hikes and bike rides can leave you drained, especially in cooler weather. Pack plenty of high-energy snacks and water to keep your energy up. Don't forget a thermos of hot tea or coffee for extra warmth on chilly mornings!
Know Your Limits: Fall weather can be more challenging than it seems, so be mindful of the trail conditions and your physical limits. Trails can be slippery from rain or fallen leaves, and daylight hours are shorter, so plan your adventure accordingly to ensure you have enough time to finish before dark.
Trail Preparation: For remote trails like Angel’s Staircase or Maple Pass Loop, be sure to bring a map or GPS, as cell service can be unreliable. Always carry a basic first aid kit, a flashlight, and a fully charged phone.
By taking a few extra precautions, you can make the most of your fall adventure while staying safe and comfortable. Now, grab your gear, pack your layers, and let’s dive into some of the top trails and routes for an unforgettable fall experience!
1. Mountain Biking: Angel’s Staircase, Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness
Angel’s Staircase is one of the most challenging and epic mountain bike trails in Washington, and is exceptionally beautiful during the fall due to an abundance of larches. Larches are the only type of deciduous pine tree, whose needles turn lime green then yellow as they drop. Located in the Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness, the most common route is to follow the Eagle Lake Trail to Martin Creek, then Cooney Lake, Angel’s Staircase, and Summit Trail before returning via Eagle Lake Trail. Make sure you are prepared with plenty of water, snacks, layers and patch kits as this route will take you over 20 miles and almost 5,000 vertical feet into remote alpine wilderness.
2. Hiking: Maple Pass Loop, North Cascades
If you’re looking to mix things up with a hike, the Maple Pass Loop in the North Cascades is no secret to outdoor enthusiasts in Washington, but that is because it is a perfect choice! This 7.2-mile loop offers breathtaking panoramic views, alpine lakes, and vibrant fall foliage. It’s a moderately difficult hike that rewards you with some of the most stunning scenery in Washington. Like Angel’s Staircase, the Maple Pass Loop offers larch views. Additionally, It’s one of the few loop trails in the North Cascades as opposed to an out and back - counter-clockwise seems to be most popular, but we like it in both directions!
3. Road Biking: Yakima Greenway Trail, Yakima Valley
For those who prefer road biking, the Yakima Greenway Trail is a scenic and accessible option. This 20-mile trail follows the Yakima River, offering beautiful views of the river, surrounding countryside, and abundant wildlife. This paved trail provides access to parks, fishing lakes, picnic areas, playgrounds and river access landings. To learn more, check out the Yakima Greenway Map.
4. Scenic Drive: Chuckanut Byway, Puget Sound
If you’d rather take in the fall colors from the comfort of your car, we don’t judge! The Chuckanut Scenic Byway is an excellent choice. This drive takes you along the coast, offering stunning views of the Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. The road is lined with vibrant fall foliage, making it one of the most beautiful drives in the state. In addition to a scenic drive, this byway offers several opportunities for hiking and biking - a couple of our favorites include Oyster Dome and Chuckanut mountain. For an added PNW bonus, you can also visit the Taylor Shellfish Farm.
