Epic Fall Adventures in Washington State

Washington State is undoubtedly a great place for fall, whether you're an avid outdoor enthusiast or a casual leaf peeper. With its diverse landscapes and stunning fall foliage, there are countless fall adventure opportunities state wide. In this post, we'll unveil some of our favorite spots for fall adventures in Washington including mountain bike trails, hiking trails, gravel/ road bike routes, and even some scenic drives.

Before we get into it, we have to give a big shout out to local trail organizations like the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance and Washington Trail Association. Without their dedication to maintaining and expanding our trail systems, many of these adventures would not be possible.

1. [Mountain Bike] Angel’s Staircase

Angel’s Staircase is one of the most challenging and epic mountain bike trails in Washington, and is exceptionally beautiful during the fall due to an abundance of larches - the only type of deciduous pine tree, whose needles turn lime green then yellow as they drop. Located in the Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness, the most common route is Eagle Lake Trail → Martin Creek Trail → Cooney Lake Trail → Angel’s Staircase → Summit Trail then back down Eagle Lake Trail to finish. Make sure you are prepared with plenty of water, snacks, layers and patch kits as this route will take you over 20 miles and almost 5,000 vertical feet into remote alpine wilderness.

2.  [Hike] Maple Pass Loop

If you’re looking to mix things up with a hike, the Maple Pass Loop in the North Cascades is no secret to outdoor enthusiasts in Washington, but that is because it is a perfect choice! This 7.2-mile loop offers breathtaking panoramic views, alpine lakes, and vibrant fall foliage. It’s a moderately difficult hike that rewards you with some of the most stunning scenery in Washington. Similar to the Angel’s Staircase route, this loop also has opportunities to peep larches. Additionally, It’s one of the few loop trails in the North Cascades as opposed to an out and back - counter-clockwise seems to be most popular, but we like it in both directions!

3. [Road Biking] Yakima Greenway Trail

For those who prefer road biking, the Yakima Greenway Trail is a scenic and accessible option. This 20-mile trail follows the Yakima River, offering beautiful views of the river, surrounding countryside, and abundant wildlife. This paved trail provides access to parks, fishing lakes, picnic areas, playgrounds and river access landings. To learn more, check out the Yakima Greenway Map.

4. [Drive] Chuckanut Scenic Byway

If you’d rather take in the fall colors from the comfort of your car, we don’t judge! The Chuckanut Scenic Byway is an excellent choice. This drive takes you along the coast, offering stunning views of the Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. The road is lined with vibrant fall foliage, making it one of the most beautiful drives in the state. In addition to a scenic drive, this byway offers several opportunities for hiking and biking - a couple of our favorites include Oyster Dome and Chuckanut mountain. For an added PNW bonus, you can also visit the Taylor Shellfish Farm.
