As the Lords of Dogtown paved a way for surfers to test their skills out of the water, skateboarding quickly rolled in as one of the greatest ways to combine movement and creativity with an urban landscape. Skateboards are an incredibly versatile tool, serving as an outlet for exercise, getting progressive in the skatepark or simply as a fun and convenient way to get around town. Skateboarding is an activity that people of any age can enjoy, and the beauty comes in it’s simplicity-all you need is some smooth ground and a board and you can have endless fun! Skateboards come in a few different shapes and sizes that determine what type of skateboarding you’ll be doing. Grab a short-board and learn some new tricks, or hop on a long-board and go for a nice cruise around town. No matter your adventure, skateboarding is a fantastic, low-barrier way to enjoy being outside and moving your body in a variety of settings!
How to choose
Choosing a skateboard is pretty straight-forward, like most board-sports, it comes down to what type of riding you’ll want to be doing. If you’re looking to do some tricks and maybe hit up the local skatepark, then you’ll want to go with a traditional short-board. The shape of the board, including the concave deck and lifted tip and tail, allow for all types of jumping, grinding, sliding and carving, which is perfect for doing tricks. These boards typically come with alloy trucks and street wheels that are harder and more durable, which makes them much more attuned to progressive riding. If you’re looking to bust some moves and test your technical skills at a local park or skate-spot, then go with a shortboard!
A shortboard is fine for getting around town short distances, but won’t have the same smoothness or momentum as a longboard, so if you’re looking to cruise around for a while, you may want to opt for a longboard instead! Longboards are typically longer and wider than a traditional shortboard and are designed with comfort in mind. A longboard will have wide, reverse-kingpin trucks and softer wheels, meaning they will roll longer, smoother and allow for more flowy turns. Longboards are designed to be easy to ride, carry a lot of speed (or a little bit of speed for a long distance) and make for a comfortable ride. A longboard is a fantastic way to cruise around a city and see the local sights, making it easy to stop, pickup your board and bring it with you rather than having to find a place to lock up a bike. If you’re looking to cruise around town and explore the area using your own two feet and some wheels, then go for a longboard!
