Climbing without ropes seems dangerous, but the discipline of bouldering allows folks to climb closer to the ground so they don’t need ropes and clips. For this style of climbing, you’d lay down a crash pad to help brace the impact of a fall. Crash pads are made of thick foam, similar to a yoga mat or gymnastics flooring. They are lightweight and usually come equipped with backpack straps to make it easier to carry them with you.
Bouldering mat manufacturers make size choices pretty simple for us. You will generally find two sizes of pads: small and large. Sometimes these are called half and full or medium and big. Regardless, you are looking at a 3ft x 4ft pad or a 4ft x 5ft pad. These sizes may vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer but for the most part, they stay pretty consistent.
