Description

Helmets are a vital piece of safety equipment in all disciplines, but especially so in climbing. Climbing helmets are very lightweight and breathable, but they provide significant protection for falling rocks, bumping into the wall and especially during a big fall. It’s even important to wear your helmet while belaying!

How to choose

When looking for a climbing helmet, you’ll notice that they usually come in two sizes – typically S/M and M/L. This is because climbing helmets are adjustable, so each size covers a range of head circumferences. Each brand varies slightly, but the smaller helmet size is usually for a head circumference of about 19in - 22in (48cm - 55cm) while the larger size accommodates heads that are about 22in - 25in (55cm - 63.5cm). There is always some overlap for those who fall right in the middle.

To ensure a helmet will fit in its most basic form, measure your head and compare it to the manufacturer’s specs. To measure, wrap a flexible tape measure, or piece of cord around your forehead, just above the eyebrows and just above the ears. About half the climbing brands who make helmets offer 2 sizes of helmets, often stated as Small/Medium or Size 1 option and a Medium/Large or Size 2 option.
