GeerGarage believes the outdoors should be shared and enjoyed by all. Unfortunately, climate change will bring about irreversible changes that will forever alter the very nature of the outdoor landscapes that we depend on for both life and happiness.
The more people are able to experience the outdoors the more people will appreciate and value it. This makes us stronger in the fight against climate change.
The GeerGarage community is part of a movement to change the way society thinks, acts and values our precious planet and the people who inhabit it. Join us!
GeerGarage promotes environmental sustainability by facilitating gear re-use as an alternative to the purchase of new gear. Purchased gear sits unused for most of its life. Unused equipment is both a waste of your money and the resources that were required to manufacture the gear. That backpacking pack you are considering for your next purchase will be responsible for significant CO2 emissions during its production and distribution to you.
Our community is not alone in our efforts to protect the environment. According to a recent article in the New York Times, the "right to repair" movement has the goal of requiring "companies to make their parts, tools and information available to consumers and repair shops in order to keep devices from ending up in the scrap heap." The movement’s advocates argue for the prohibition of rules increasingly imposed by manufacturers that "restrict people’s use of devices that they own and encourage a throwaway culture by making repairs too difficult. They also argue that it’s part of a culture of planned obsolescence — the idea that products are designed to be short-lived in order to encourage people to buy more stuff. That contributes to wasted natural resources and energy use at a time when climate change requires movement in the opposite direction to rein in plant-warming emissions." The GeerGarage community is proud to work in tandem with the right to repair movement.
GeerGarage encourages community by providing a platform where neighbors interested in exploring the outdoors can benefit from each other. Playing outside oftentimes requires knowledge that can only be gained through experience. This lack of experience can be daunting and many people do not have connections to outdoorspeople that can provide them with the needed support.
GeerGarage is a community of local outdoor enthusiasts that are committed to sharing equipment, offering tips on gear, suggesting adventures and advising on outdoor best practices. We are in this world together and GeerGarage hopes to bring us all a little closer.
According to a 2018 posting on the website Wellness Universe, there are five benefits to being part of a community: having others to encourage you, having others to support you, having others to challenge you to be better, having others to celebrate your success with, and having others to whom you can give back. When owners and renters use the GeerGarage platform, they help to build a community based around these five pillars while also protecting our environment.
Unfortunately, new outdoor equipment is too expensive for many people. You also need a lot of it! To put things into perspective, purchasing the minimum gear required to go on a backpacking trip can cost as much as $1000. GeerGarage has embraced a pricing philosophy designed to make the outdoors more accessible to all.
Buying new outdoor gear is expensive and represents a chunk of disposable income many cannot afford these days. One article underlines that "the most important determinant of consumer spending is disposable income." By promoting gear re-use, GeerGarage not only permits lenders to earn back some of the money they have already spent, it also permits renters to obtain gear without incurring the upfront cost of buying new and at prices lower than other rental outlets.
